Pertussis infection is an ongoing problem in the U.S. despite widespread vaccination of infants and young children. These infections often affect adolescents and adults with waning immunity. Such individuals may have protracted cough, emesis, and weight loss; they can also transmit the disease to young, incompletely immunized children, who are at greater risk for morbidity and mortality.
