As youth obesity rates rise, increasing attention has been directed at a cluster of risk factors (e.g., hypertension, low levels of high-density lipoprotein [HDL] cholesterol, abdominal obesity), referred to as metabolic syndrome (Met-S), that might confer increased risk (beyond that of obesity) for adult cardiovascular disease. However, Met-S diagnostic criteria are less well established for adolescents than for adults.
