One of the more difficult scenarios for a general pediatrician is to be the attending physician in the delivery room when a baby is born with an Apgar score of 0, resuscitation is initiated, and the infant fails to respond. Investigators at a single U.K. institution prospectively evaluated outcomes of all infants during a 14-year period who were born without congenital anomalies after 24 weeks’ gestation and who had Apgar scores of 0 at birth and at 10 minutes.
