Treatment outcomes for patients with anorexia nervosa generally are more favorable for adolescents than for adults, with family therapy being an essential component of treatment. Investigators in the U.K. report 5-year follow-up results for 38 adolescents (37 females; mean age, 15.5 years) who were referred to an eating disorder clinic for anorexia nervosa and had been randomized to receive 1 year of conjoint (parents and adolescents together) or separate (parents and adolescent seen separately) outpatient family therapy. At study entry, the average duration of illness was about 1 year, mean BMI was 15.4 kg/m2, and most patients had received prior inpatient (45%) or outpatient (18%) treatment.
