Portion sizes have increased substantially during the last 10 years, and the increase is linked to excess calorie consumption and risk for overweight. To examine determinants and consequences of large portions in children’s diets, investigators surveyed about 5000 fifth-grade students in Nova Scotia. As part of the survey, children were shown three-dimensional graduated food models and asked to indicate their usual portion size of French fries, meat, potato chips, and vegetables. The smallest model was the reference portion and reflected current guidelines for appropriate portion size.
