The best management strategy for overweight children, especially those with insulin resistance (a precursor to type 2 diabetes), still is unknown. Investigators in Australia evaluated the effects of supervised group circuit exercise training in 14 obese children (age range, 9–16; mean BMI, 31.7) who had elevated fasting insulin levels but normal fasting glucose levels. The hour-long exercise sessions were conducted three times per week for 8 weeks and included aerobic cycle ergometer exercise and weight training. No specific dietary recommendations were made.
