Both acute otitis media (AOM) and community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) are encountered often in general pediatric practice. A common and persistent therapeutic conundrum is the patient with an infection that is refractory to usual therapies. Fluoroquinolones are used widely to treat CAP in adults but have been used sparingly in children because of concerns about musculoskeletal side effects. As a result, most pediatric pathogens remain highly susceptible to this class of antibiotics. Three recent articles report on fluoroquinolone use in children.
