Motor vehicle injuries are a leading cause of death among adolescents and young adults. Most studies have focused on the role of alcohol in motor vehicle accidents, but some research has suggested that other drugs may also be involved. Investigators analyzed nationally representative data from the 2001 to 2006 Monitoring the Future study to determine the extent to which high school seniors reported driving after using alcohol or other drugs, or riding with a driver who had, in the previous 2 weeks. About 2700 students participated in the survey each year.
Overall, the percentage of seniors who reported driving after using drugs or alcohol or riding with a driver who had used drugs or alcohol decreased modestly from 2001 to 2006 (35% to 30%),…
