Small for Gestational Age Is Linked to Worse Course of Nephrotic Syndrome

Nephrotic syndrome joins the list of problems associated with low birth weight.

Children who are born small for gestational age (SGA) are at increased risk for developing hypertension and cardiac events when they are adults. To determine if SGA also is associated with an aggravated course of nephrotic syndrome, investigators retrospectively reviewed the charts of 62 children who received a diagnosis of nongenetic nephrotic syndrome between ages 1 and 18 years at a single center in Germany.

Six children were born SGA (less than –1.5 standard deviation score; equivalent to the 7th percentile), and 56 children were born appropriate for gestational age (AGA).
