Data from the 2007 Monitoring the Future survey indicate a decline since 2006 in illicit-drug use among teenagers in the 8th, 10th, and 12th grades. Approximately 48,000 students enrolled in 403 schools nationwide completed the confidential in-school survey.
The proportion of teens who reported any lifetime illicit-drug use (other than alcohol and tobacco) was 19% among 8th graders (an absolute decline of 1.9% from 2006), 36% among 10th graders (–0.5%), and 47% among 12th graders (–1.4%), although only the decline among 8th graders was significant.
