Recurrent gastrointestinal symptoms are common in children and adolescents, but the etiology of recurrent abdominal pain and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) in this population is uncertain. In adults, IBS can develop as a sequela of acute bacterial gastroenteritis (AGE). To explore this association in children, investigators examined postinfectious functional gastrointestinal disorders (FGIDs) in 44 children (age range, 3–19 years) who presented with acute diarrhea and had positive bacterial stool cultures (salmonella, 54%; campylobacter, 32%; shigella, 14%).
