Use of paracetamol (acetaminophen) by mothers for fever during pregnancy has been associated with increased risk for childhood asthma in their babies. Investigators surveyed parents of more than 200,000 children aged 6 to 7 years from 73 centers in 31 countries to examine whether use of acetaminophen for fever during the first year of life or in the 12 months before the survey was associated with asthma, rhinoconjunctivitis, or eczema.
In multivariate analysis, use of acetaminophen during the first year of life was associated with significantly increased risk for asthma symptoms at age 6 to 7 years compared with no use (odds ratio, 1.46; 95% confidence interval, 1.36–1.56).
