Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is being diagnosed with increasing frequency in pediatric patients and their families. Investigators in Japan assessed PTSD in 145 mothers of children who had undergone surgery for congenital disorders at one surgery department between 1995 and 2005.
Mothers were classified into three groups according to the severity of their child’s congenital disorder: good prognosis and cure expected (group one; 44 mothers), disease rarely fatal but persistent impairment likely (group two; 29 mothers), and condition sometimes fatal and poor prognosis expected (group three; 72 mothers).
