In July 2008, the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) updated decade-old guidelines for screening and treating pediatric lipid disorders (Lipid Screening and Cardiovascular Health in Childhood, JW Cardiol Jul 30 2008, and JW Pediatr Adolesc Med Jul 16 2008). Included in the update are some long-awaited changes in approach: (1) earlier and more frequent lipid screening, (2) fasting lipid profile as the recommended screening method, and (3) expanded screening criteria to include obese children and others at high risk for early atherosclerosis.
