Little is known about the risk factors and clinical presentation of urinary tract infections (UTIs) in premature infants. Investigators reviewed medical records for 6198 preterm infants admitted to a neonatal intensive care unit in Israel between 1995 and 2003 and identified 56 infants (0.9%; 75% boys) who had UTIs.
The most common presenting symptoms of UTI were feeding intolerance (62%), apnea and bradycardia (45%), lethargy (30%), and abdominal distention (12%). Incidence of UTI was significantly higher in infants with very low birth weights (<1500 g) than in those with higher birth weights (3.2% vs. 0.4%).
