Chlamydia is a common sexually transmitted infection among females aged 15 to 25. The infection causes few or no symptoms, but if left untreated, it can progress to pelvic inflammatory disease, chronic pelvic pain, infertility, and ectopic pregnancy. Routine screening of sexually active young women for chlamydia was recommended in 1989. To determine current compliance with this recommendation, the CDC analyzed claims data from the Healthcare Effectiveness Data and Information Set (HEDIS), a tool used by more than 90% of health plans in the U.S. to measure performance on important dimensions of care and service.
