Allergic rhinitis affects up to 42% of children by age 6 years, but few studies have evaluated the effects of intranasal corticosteroids in children aged 2 to 5 years. To address concerns that intranasal corticosteroids may affect the hypothalamic-pituitary axis and growth of young children, researchers conducted a manufacturer-funded, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study of triamcinolone acetonide aqueous nasal spray (TAA AQ) in children aged 2 to 5 years who had allergic rhinitis.
