Risperidone is the only FDA-approved drug for children with autistic spectrum disorders (ASDs) and is used for treatment of ASD-associated aggression, self-injury, and temper tantrums (JW Pediatr Adolesc Med Feb 7 2007). No FDA-approved medication exists for treating core ASD symptoms in children and youth (e.g., impairments in social interactions, communication, unusual preoccupations and repetitive behaviors). Clinical similarity between repetitive behaviors in patients with ASDs and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) suggests that effective medications for OCD might be beneficial for ASDs.
