Vitamin D's potent immunomodulatory properties have led investigators to examine its role in the development of allergy and asthma. Previously, the authors of this paper reported an inverse association between higher vitamin D intake during pregnancy and lower asthma symptoms in children. Now, they have examined the relation between vitamin D levels and markers of allergy and asthma severity in 616 Costa Rican children (age range, 6–14 years) with asthma who were enrolled in a genetics study.
