About 1% to 2% of adolescents have chronic daily headache (CDH), defined as ≥15 headache days per month for >3 months, but little is known about the long-term course of CDH in adolescents. These authors studied a community-based cohort of 122 Taiwanese children with CDH who were identified at ages 12–14 years in a survey of students. Participants were followed for 8 years.
At 1- and 2-year follow-up telephone interviews, 40% and 25% of the cohort, respectively, still met criteria for CDH. At the 8-year follow-up, 103 subjects participated in a semistructured telephone interview conducted by a neurologist; 11% of participants reported no headaches, 69% reported headaches ≥1 day per month, and only 12% met CDH criteria.
