Adolescents who misuse drugs are more likely to engage in other risky behaviors. To determine whether a drug prevention program reduced risky sexual behavior in addition to drug use, researchers analyzed survey data from 1901 unmarried and sexually active 21-year-old men and women who had participated in a middle- and high-school–based drug program. The program was designed to help youth understand the risks of drug use and build skills and self-confidence to resist pressures to use drugs.
About 4600 adolescents in 55 South Dakota schools had received 14 prevention lessons in middle school, with or without an additional 10 lessons in high school, or no intervention. Of the 57% who completed the follow-up survey at age 21, 1901 were unmarried…
