In 2005, the European Society of Cardiology proposed the Lausanne recommendations for preparticipation screening of young athletes for cardiovascular disease and to prevent sudden cardiac death (Eur Heart J 2005; 26:516). The recommendations were based on data from one region in Italy and include obtaining a family history, personal history, physical exam, and 12-lead electrocardiogram (ECG) every 2 years in athletes ages 12 to 35 years. But, few studies have examined the applicability of the Lausanne recommendations in other populations. Investigators in the Netherlands applied these recommendations to athletes (age range, 12–35 years) at a university center of sports medicine between 2006 and 2008.
