Cardiac events are the leading cause of mortality in childhood cancer survivors. To examine risk for morbidity associated with cardiovascular disease, investigators surveyed 14,359 5-year cancer survivors (54% males) in whom cancer was diagnosed before age 21 years (median age, 6 years) and 3899 of their siblings. More than half the survivors received both anthracyclines and radiation, 11% received radiation and surgery, 18% received chemotherapy and surgery, and <1% received radiation alone.
