Obesity and cardiometabolic risk in children and adolescents are linked to insulin resistance (IR), but uncertainty exists about how to define, assess, measure, prevent, and treat IR in children. An international conference involving members of pediatric endocrine societies convened to develop an evidence-based approach to childhood IR. Highlights of the conference include the following:
IR is a risk factor for prediabetes and type 2 diabetes in children, but data are limited on whether IR predicts development of impaired glucose tolerance or type 2 diabetes.
Standards for IR in children (including definitions for normal and abnormal levels) have not been established.
