The number of studies on probiotics increased in 2009 and 2010, seemingly exponentially, and several were summarized in Journal Watch Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine. At least a decade has passed since convincing studies established probiotics as effective agents in the treatment of acute infectious diarrhea and the prevention of antibiotic-associated diarrhea in children. Recent treatment studies have examined the effectiveness of probiotics for colic, constipation, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), eczema, and cow's milk allergy in children. Other studies have examined the efficacy of probiotics for prevention of necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) in premature infants and upper respiratory infections (URIs).
