Pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) is a serious infection of the upper female genital tract; optimum treatment and management strategies, especially for adolescents, are still evolving. To compare reproductive health outcomes between adolescents (age, ≤19 years) and adults (age, >19 years) with PID, investigators performed a secondary analysis of data from a multicenter randomized trial assessing PID treatment in 831 women with mild-to-moderate disease. Diagnostic criteria for PID included pelvic discomfort for less than 30 days; pelvic organ tenderness on exam; and leukorrhea, mucopurulent cervicitis, or positive test for gonorrhea or chlamydia.
