The imminent 10th anniversary of September 11, 2001 (9/11), is a reminder to pediatricians that the grief associated with direct or indirect exposure to traumatic events can have profound and persistent effects on children. For children who lost a parent or other family member on 9/11, the effect might be severe. For other children who were bombarded with recurrent images of the attacks on television, psychological sequelae can also persist. Most children will undoubtedly be exposed to images of the 9/11 attacks in the media during the month of September.
