As a follow-up to its 2006 workforce studies, the American Board of Pediatrics (ABP) has published its latest report on the pediatric workforce. There are 52,673 currently certified general pediatricians in the U.S., with a national ratio of 1400 children per pediatrician.
Interest in a career in pediatrics has remained relatively constant, with 13% of graduates choosing pediatric residencies in 2010. In 2010–2011, 10,397 pediatrics residents were in training (8833 categorical, 1416 medicine/pediatrics, and 146 combined programs). The number of categorical residents has increased 7.5% since 2004, likely due to reduced resident work hours. The number of residents in medicine/pediatrics programs has decreased 3.9% since 2004.
