As many as 60% to 85% of acute asthma exacerbations are associated with viral respiratory infections (VRIs). Investigators examined the effect of VRI on clinical response to treatment with inhaled salbutamol, oral prednisolone, and supplemental oxygen in 218 children (mean age, 6.6 years) examined in an emergency department in Australia for acute asthma attacks. Most children (77%) had symptoms of VRI (defined as a combination of symptoms including runny nose, sore throat, and cough).
