Understanding sexual attitudes and behaviors of young people is critical to help them reduce their risk for sexually transmitted infections (including HIV) and pregnancy when appropriate. To examine patterns and correlates of same-sex sexual activity among U.S. youth, investigators analyzed data on sexual attraction, identity, and behavior from 2688 males and females (age range, 15–21 years) who participated in the National Survey of Family Growth in 2002.
Overall, 15% of females and 5% of males reported sexual attraction to both sexes. Among females and males, respectively, 87% and 93% described themselves as heterosexual, 1% and 1% as homosexual, 6% and 2% as bisexual, and 7% and 4% as other. Among those who described attraction only to th…
