An association between idiopathic epilepsy and type 1 diabetes mellitus (DM) has been observed in adults. Investigators examined this association in an observational cohort analysis of 45,851 children and adolescents (age, <20 years; mean age, 14 years) in a German and Austrian diabetes database.
The prevalence of epilepsy was 15.5 per 1000 patients. About half (53%) of these patients were treated with antiepileptic drugs (8.2 per 1000 patients). Children with DM and epilepsy were significantly young at onset of diabetes and shorter than nonepileptic patients with DM.
