Low back pain often emerges during adolescence, can be disabling, and is a predictor of low back pain in adults. Low back pain often occurs with other medical conditions in adults. To examine comorbidity patterns in adolescents, investigators analyzed self-reported health survey data from 1391 adolescent children (93% white; mean age, 17 years) of a cohort of women enrolled during pregnancy in Australia. Adolescents completed questionnaires about lifetime occurrence of health professional–diagnosed medical conditions, health-related quality of life (HRQOL), lifetime experience of back pain, and impact of back pain on work, school, and physical activities.
