More than 1,000 youths in the U.S. start smoking every day. To help update U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) recommendations for clinicians on use of interventions to prevent tobacco use initiation, promote cessation, or both in children and adolescents, investigators performed a systematic review of 19 controlled trials of primary care interventions targeted at youth (age range, 11–17 years), parents, or both. Most interventions were behavior based. Four trials were considered good quality and 15 fair quality. Interventions that could be implemented in a healthcare setting or referral setting were considered relevant to primary care.
