Binge drinking is associated with a wide variety of health and social problems. CDC investigators combined data from the 2011 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (in 18–24-year-olds) and Youth Risk Behavior System (grades 9–12) to examine this phenomenon in young women and girls.
Among women aged 18–24 years, 24% reported binge drinking (≥4 drinks on one occasion in the past 30 days), with an average frequency of 3.6 episodes per month and 6.4 drinks per occasion. Among high-school girls, 38% reported consuming alcohol in the past 30 days and binge drinking (≥5 drinks in a row in the past 30 days) was reported by 55% of these girls (grades 9, 45%; 10, 50%; 11, 58%; 12, 62%).
