The advent of antipsychotic medications has made it possible for many patients with schizophrenia to live in the community and even to form friendships and intimate relationships and maintain employment. However, concern about side effects is a significant barrier to adherence to medication regimens. Tardive dyskinesia and parkinsonian symptoms have received the most attention. Weight gain is another potential side effect, one that is often of particular concern to women, regardless of their mental health. These authors performed a comprehensive literature review to determine whether and which antipsychotics affect weight.
