This is another report from the discontinued arm of the WHI's hormone therapy trial (Journal Watch Women's Health Aug 7 2002). In this arm of the trial, 16,608 women were randomly assigned to receive either placebo or conjugated estrogens (0.625 mg/day) plus medroxyprogesterone acetate (2.5 mg/day).
This arm was stopped because the risks for breast cancer, stroke, and heart disease outweighed the potential benefits of HT (Journal Watch Women's Health Aug 19 2003 and Aug 6 2003). WHI investigators now provide final data on the association between HT and coronary heart disease (CHD; defined as acute myocardial infarction requiring hospitalization, death due to CHD, or silent infarction noted on serial electrocardiography).
