Postpartum depression occurs in an estimated 10%–15% of women. To assess the broader risk for psychiatric disorders among women and men during the first year postpartum, Danish investigators analyzed civil registry data for more than 2 million people who became first-time parents from 1973 to 2005. Identified mental disorders included schizophrenia, depressive disorders, bipolar affective disorders, and adjustment disorders. The investigators compared the incidence of first hospitalization for a psychiatric disorder during specified periods before 11 months postpartum with the incidence during the reference period, which they defined as the 11th month postpartum.
