An association between inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) — which includes Crohn disease and ulcerative colitis — and adverse pregnancy outcomes has been suggested but not well characterized. Investigators performed a meta-analysis of 12 studies published from 1980 through 2005 that compared pregnancy outcomes in women with and without IBD. The studies included a total of 3907 women with IBD (63% with Crohn disease and 36% with ulcerative colitis).
Compared with women without IBD, those with IBD had a significantly higher incidence of cesarean delivery (odds ratio, 1.5) or premature birth (OR, 1.87), or of having babies with low birth weight (OR, 2.1) or congenital abnormalities (OR, 2.37).
