The U.K. has a high prevalence of cardiovascular (CV) disease despite also having one of the world’s highest rates of tea consumption, leading some to speculate that the common British practice of adding milk to tea could impede its potential CV benefits. Researchers in Germany conducted a study of 16 healthy postmenopausal women who consumed black tea, black tea with skimmed milk, or boiled water on 3 different days. Flow-mediated brachial artery vasodilation was measured before and 2 hours after beverage consumption. In addition, the effects of combinations of tea and individual milk proteins on nitric oxide synthase (NOS) activity and vasorelaxation were tested in vitro.
