To examine whether the risk profile associated with hormone therapy varies with time, investigators conducted a secondary analysis of data from the Women’s Health Initiative trials that had compared conjugated equine estrogen alone or estrogen plus medroxyprogesterone acetate versus placebo (Journal Watch Women’s Health May 2 2006). Focusing on age and years since menopause, the authors studied the effects of HT on coronary heart disease (CHD), stroke, and total mortality in more than 27,000 women (age range, 50–79).
