Despite evidence-based guidelines for mammography screening, the percentage of women screened has decreased slightly recently (MMWR). To determine whether a patient reminder system improves mammography screening rates, investigators randomized 6665 women (age range, 40–75) at a large, multispecialty Mayo Clinic medical practice to receive either usual care or usual care plus a personalized reminder letter 3 months before annual screening was due. A subgroup of 1724 clinic employees in the reminder group was further randomized to receive two additional reminders through U.S. mail or e-mail, plus a telephone call if no response was received, or no additional reminders. Appointment secretaries sent the reminders and scheduled the appointments.…
