In the decade since the FDA approved the use of computer-aided detection (CAD) for screening mammography, some breast-imaging centers have implemented CAD to improve the performance of screening mammograms. In a multicenter study supported by U.S. federal agencies and the American Cancer Society, investigators evaluated the effect of CAD on screening mammography among 222,135 women (age ≥40) who underwent mammography from 1998 to 2002 at 43 clinical sites (429,345 mammograms), including 2351 women diagnosed with breast cancer within 1 year of screening.
