The NIH Consensus Panel recommends at least 30 minutes of moderate-intensity physical activity on most, preferably all, days of the week. To examine the effect of exercise doses at 50%, 100%, and 150% of this recommendation, investigators evaluated fitness changes in 427 sedentary postmenopausal women (age range, 45–75; mean BMI at baseline, 31.8) with elevated blood pressure who had been randomized to no exercise (control) or one of three doses of exercise. Women in the exercise groups participated in supervised sessions on treadmills or cycle ergometers three to four times per week for 6 months. Aerobic fitness was quantified based on peak absolute oxygen consumption (VO2abs, L/min).
