Between ages 2 and 39, about 2 of every 100 girls and women will develop invasive cancer — cancer that has spread from the tissue in which it started into the healthy surrounding tissue. With new ways to find cancers early and treat them effectively, many of these girls and women will survive. But these lifesaving treatment technologies come with a price. Treatments strong enough to kill cancer cells can also kill normal cells, including those needed for the reproductive system to work. With so many cancer survivors going on to live healthy lives, researchers have directed their attention to preserving the ability of these girls and women to become pregnant.
