Although the long-term safety of surgical abortion during the first trimester is well established, medical abortion has become common only recently; accordingly, assessing the long-term outcome of medical abortion is important. In an NIH-supported observational analysis, investigators studied a nationwide cohort of Danish women who underwent elective induced first-trimester abortion from 1999 to 2004. The data were linked to national registry information on births, ectopic pregnancies, and spontaneous abortions. Abortions conducted with misoprostol alone or mifepristone followed by misoprostol were categorized as medical abortions.
