Sleep disturbances are common in peri- and postmenopausal women, and hot flashes have been shown to contribute to insomnia (Journal Watch Women’s Health Oct 12 2006). But are these complaints related only to menopausal symptoms, or do other causes also play a role? Through newspaper advertisements, researchers recruited 102 women (51 white, 48 black, 3 Asian; age range, 44–56) with self-reported poor sleep. Women using medications or hormones that might affect sleep were excluded. One-night polysomnography and the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index were used to assess objective and subjective sleep quality, respectively; mental health status was evaluated with the Hamilton Anxiety and Depression Rating Scales.
