Data concerning a link between history of endometriosis and risk for melanoma have been inconsistent. Results of a retrospective cohort study of infertile women showed that the risk for melanoma was doubled in women with endometriosis, but small cohort studies in the U.S. and Sweden showed no association. In this prospective study, 100,000 French women answered questionnaires about gynecologic history and cancer status every 2 years.
During a median follow-up of 12 years, there were 363 confirmed melanoma cases.
