Given the morbidity and mortality associated with hip fracture, identifying at-risk individuals has been an important research focus (Journal Watch Women’s Health Aug 30 2007). Using data from more than 93,000 participants in the observational component of the Women’s Health Initiative (WHI), investigators developed a comprehensive model to predict 5-year risk for hip fracture in postmenopausal women. The algorithm was then validated based on information from more than 68,000 women in the clinical trial element of the WHI.
Eleven clinical variables in the algorithm predicted the 5-year risk for hip fracture: age, self-reported health status, height, weight, fracture after age 55, ethnicity, physical activity, smoking, parental hip fracture, …
