Manual vacuum aspiration (MVA) and electric vacuum aspiration (EVA) are options for surgical management of miscarriage, which ends 15% of pregnancies. Although patients undergoing elective terminations have given MVA and EVA similar acceptability and pain ratings, the two methods have not been evaluated as treatments for failed pregnancy (miscarriage). As part of a larger trial of misoprostol versus vacuum aspiration for first-trimester loss, investigators evaluated safety, efficacy, and patients’ opinions of MVA administered in an office setting compared with EVA administered in a hospital setting.
