Women with medical conditions pose challenges to clinicians prescribing contraception. Concerns about health risks of reversible hormonal contraceptive methods can result in use of a less effective method, sterilization, or no method. However, because the underlying medical problem might exacerbate pregnancy-related complications — or the pregnancy might adversely affect the original medical condition — the provision of highly effective contraception is an essential part of healthcare for these patients. The risks associated with contraceptive use must be weighed against the (usually higher) risks related to pregnancy. Fortunately, contraceptive-related risks generally are minimal, even for women with medical conditions.
